MEDical InterCultural Opportunities for Students
The fourth trip to Leon, Nicaragua was a success, even hampered by transportation strikes and a hurricane! This year 8 students, 3 preceptors and a translator spent a month in Leon, working in the urban clinics, the rural clinics and shadowing in the hospital. 2 residents joined us half-way through as additional resources and preceptors as a ‘test-run’ that will hopefully be continued in the future. Also, an effort was made to establish local contacts for community service and we were able to assist a local doctor in her efforts to provide mosquito abatement in the rural community of Goyena.
The third team of medical students from Leon, Nicaragua is back! They will be sharing their experience on August 8, 2006 at noon in MS-1C 180.
Unfortunately, we regret to report that due to low attendance in registration of golfers this year we are unable to host our fundraiser this June 11th, 2006. All registered golfers will automatically be refunded their registration fees and if there arises any issues regarding your reimbursement please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
For the first time ever, fourth year medical students will be able to do an international elective in Nicaragua this spring. Carlos Martinez, MS-4, Jennifer Cook, MS-4, Andrew Mihalek, MS-4, and Joffre Olaya, MS-4 will work in primary care clinics and at the teaching hospital for 4 weeks, alongside preceptors from UC Davis Department of Internal Medicine. This trip will also be the culmination of years of effort put forth by these medical students, who founded MEDICOS and guided its growth.
