Camcorder

In 2002, the Computers in Medicine (CIM) student group at UC-Davis, with the help of the Office of Curricular Support at UC Davis School of Medicine, purchased a Sony MiniDV Digital Camcorder.

Web Server Hardware

The medical student web site is located on a computer system owned and operated by CIM. The system is an Hewlett-Packard Vectra VL5 200 Mhz MMX system pictured above. It presently contains 32Mbytes of memory, 2.5 Gigabytes of hard disk, a 8x CD Rom drive, a sound board, and an PCI full duplex 10base-T LAN card. The computer system was funded by the UC Davis School of medicine student affairs office.

The HP monitor for the system is a 17-inch high resolution monitor donated by Donna Lee (Lasslo). A 100 Mbyte Zip drive has been donated by the Class of 2000 for file backup.

The Office of Curricular Support (OCS) at UC Davis School of Medicine has provided us with an internet connection and room to house our computer system. OCS also provides us with security locks and the RedHat Linux operating system software and license.

Web Server Software

The system is running RedHat Linux. The web server software is Apache and also uses Perl 5.0 for CGI functions.

Word processing, spread sheets, database, etc. is provided by Microsoft Office 97 donated by Dr. Harry Matthews. Web page editing is done with Adobe PageMill donated by Dr. Tom Jue.

Future Enhancements

Additional software applications and hardware (bigger hard drive, more disks, memory, tape backup, MPEG capture board, etc.) will be added in the future. We are also looking at helping the school complete its goal of wireless internet access for students. Finally, we are working on building up a video editing suite to complement the recent addition of the digital camcorder. We will be funded by club fund raisers (shirt sales, Zip sales, etc.), by class gifts, and other donations. Please contact CIM if you or your group would like to donate equipment or software.
