Mission Statement

The Wilderness Medical Society Student Group (WMSSG) at UC Davis, sponsored by the Wilderness Medical Society, is an organization of medical students and other members of the UCD community who share a common interest in wilderness medicine. Our mission is to encourage and support programs that improve the knowledge of our membership in matters related to human activities in wilderness environments, and to promote appreciation and stewardship of those areas. In particular, we seek to promote the development of clinical skills necessary for wilderness medicine, to expose medical students to practical applications of wilderness medicine, and to provide a forum for the exploration of medical careers which involve the principles of wilderness medicine.

Exposure to and familiarity with a range of wilderness environments and activities is integral to the mission of our organization and the education of our membership. Because of UC Davis’ location, we are able to provide wilderness experiences in a diverse range of environments — from Northern California coastal regions to the foothills and mountains of the Sierra Nevada Range. Proximity to such diverse ecosystems allows our members to gain experience in a wide array of medical emergencies that may be encountered while participating in outdoor activities. Through our outdoor programs, we seek to educate our members in both the prevention and treatment of such emergencies.
