Announcements

10/20/04

TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN THE WILDERNESS MEDICAL SOCIETY - *FREE* TO THE FIRST 5 MEDICAL STUDENTS WHO RESPOND TO THIS ANNOUNCEMENT BY 10/27/04.

In order for our group to maintain our official sponsorship, the Wilderness Medical Society requires at least five members of our SIG to become official WMS members each year (remember, membership in our campus group, the WMSSG, is free). The benefits of official sponsorship to our group are the special deals we receive for annual dues, conference fees, and teaching materials...the benefit to the WMS, of course, is the creation of the next generation of Wilderness Medicine physicians. The membership fee is only $20 if you are part of an officially sponsored club like ours. Without being part of a SIG, the annual dues are $55. Twenty dollars is the cheapest fee you'll find for any national medical society. As an incentive for all of you to join *and to keep our club alive* I've arranged to subsidize the first five members who respond to this announcement (medical students only, please). That being said, even if you aren't one of the first 5 people this time around, you should still fork over the measly twenty bucks and receive all the amazing benefits of WMS membership (which are detailed here). Send an email to Aaron to sign up. Deadline is 10/27/04.

New WMSSG Lecture/Seminar/Trip Policies

We're adding a new event format this year, in the spirit of better promoting wilderness medicine education among our members. The intent is two-fold: we would like to encourage more diversity in our event offerings, and we would like to give members the opportunity to learn a topic more in depth by teaching it.

Any WMSSG member is encouraged to propose an idea for a lecture, seminar, or trip that includes a well-defined educational goal. The Co-Chairs will offer help in developing a curriculum, give planning/logistical advice, and provide financial support (within reason). The overall direction of the event, however, is in your hands. Among other resources, powerpoint presentations on many different wilderness medicine topics are available from the WMS free of charge - these prepared sildeshows cover all the most recent information on a topic, and come with a script that makes presenting a snap. But anything is possible! And remember, creating a project like this looks good on your CV. To propose an event, or for some suggestions, send an email to Aaron.

WMS SIG membership and PATAGONIA PRODEAL

Our sponsoring organization, the Wilderness Medical Society, has changed the rules of membership for this year. For our group to remain active, we have to have at least five members who are official WMS members. Lucky for us poor medical students, though, they have lowered the fee from $55 to only $10!

To encourage all of you to join and keep the SIG alive, I wanted to tell you about our fabulous PATAGONIA PRODEAL. Basically, as an active member of the WMSSG, you can order anything and everything you want (once per quarter) from Patagonia and pay just about half of retail. That's a damn good deal! The requirements for active WMSSG membership are:

We need our minimum of five official memberships by 12/15/02, so sign up and then order your warm winter fuzzies today!

Cheers,

Aaron G.
