Mission
Statement
The goal
of SSIG is to enhance early exposure to surgery and the surgical subspecialties,
and to promote awareness of the different career possibilities open to
the surgeon. We also promote a strong collaboration between the faculty,
residents, and students. This collaboration will enable future surgeons
to be more adept during surgical clerkships and to make informed career
choices, thus facilitating their own well-being. We trust this will produce
dedicated surgeons who will serve as advocates for their patients, their
communities, and their profession. Objectives of SSIG include:
- Increase
exposure in the preclinical years through shadowing/mentoring programs,
noon conference series correlated with curriculum (e.g. GI surgery during
the GI course, Neurosurgery during the Neurology course, etc.), and
suturing and knot tying workshops.
- Increase
faculty and student (all years) interactions and collaboration through
evening journal club meetings. These will provide a forum for discussion
of relevant surgical issues where views from attendings, residents,
and students can be heard in an informal setting.
- Provide
information about general surgery and surgical subspecialties, research
opportunities and overall to serve as a medium for exploration of surgery
as a career.
