The third SurgSIG dinner:

Featured speakers:

  • Dr. Hilary Brodie, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, UCDMC Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
  • Dr. Roger Low, MD, Associate Professor and Residency Director, UCDMC Department of Urology.
  • Freedom Johnson, MSIV, UCD's sole applicant to Otolaryngology this year and full of interesting stories about the early match process, interviews, and the wide world of ENT (who also did an Acting Internship in Urology).

  • Who: Anyone interested or even vaguely curious about surgery and surgical specialties

Past Events

Come join our second SurgSIG dinner! Fourth years, come share your experiences. Second and Third years, come explore your options and bring your questions. First years, come meet your colleagues and have fun.

When: Friday, Oct 25th 6:30-9pm

Where: at Dr. Mayer's house (GI Surgery) 1308 47th St, Sacramento.

Take BR-80E/50 E to 34th Street (same way as to the medcenter). Turn left off the exit onto 34st, then make an immediate right onto T street. Turn left onto Stockton. Turn right onto Alhambra. Turn right onto Folsom. Turn left onto 47th Street. It is the second house at the end of the block, between Folsom and M Street.

What: An informal gathering to meet different attendings and get a perspective into their lifestyles and quality of life. Unlike the last dinner, this gathering will have representative attendings from private practice and from the VA to address our questions and issues. Dinner and refreshments will be provided by the attendings in attendance.

Who: Hosted by SurgSIG. All medical students, residents,and significant others are invited.

Attendings: Dr. Kathrin Mayer (GI Surgery at UCDMC), Dr. Fogelberg (Residency at UCD, General Surgery at VA Mather, part-time, two kids, husband also cardiothoracic surgeon), and Dr. Anne Neuhauses (Residency at UCD, Gen Surg at S. Kaiser)

Topic: Expanding on issues and factors brought up in our last meeting and further addressing lifestyle issues which continue to affect residents during their training. The paper is "Childbearing and Child Care in Surgery" by Kathrin L. Mayer, MD; Hung S. Ho, MD; James E. Goodnight, Jr, MD, PhD in Arch Surg June 2001, 136:649-655. We will not distribute paper copies of this article at the dinner so please click here to access the online version of this paper. You will need to register for access with your AMA number (can be found on the address labels of your JAMA journals). **It is not required to read the article before the dinner.**

Come to our first official event!

When: Friday, Aug 30th 6-9pm

Where: at Dr. Battistella's home (Trauma Surgery).

3304 Sierra Oaks Dr., Sacramento. Take highway 50 to Watt Ave. exit and go north on Watt (over the freeway). Turn left at Fair Oaks Blvd (1st light). Turn left at Lawson (second left). Lawson dead ends into Sierra Oaks Dr., the house is directly across the street.

What: This event is a "journal club" by name but it is more an informal gathering to interact with attendings and surgical residents outside of the hospital setting. Get to know what the attendings home/family/and out of hospital life is like. We plan to host several dinners over the coming year in various faculty's house and to get a different (unbiased) perspective. Dinner and refreshments will be provided by Dr. Battistella for this first event.

Topic: Factors influencing residency choices and why is there a decrease in candidates for general surgery residency? The paper is "Contemporary Trends in Student Selection of Medical Specialties" by K Bland and G Isaacs in Arch Surgery March 2002, 137:259-267. The article will be provided at the meeting. **It is not necessary to read the article beforehand.**
