Honduras
Medical Mission 2010

Over the last three years, UCDSOM medical students have traveled to Siguatepaque, Honduras, with the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) and Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF) student group here at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine! A team of about fifty medical students, physicians, nurses, and dentists participated in a week-long medical mission trip to Honduras where we partnered with MedMissions, the Christian Medical and Dental Societies of Honduras and the local church to provide medical, dental and spiritual care to several local villages. This life changing experience was not only a medical mission with evangelistic outreach to the Hondurans, but also a spiritual outreach to many medical students who come to serve. These trips provide an amazing opportunity to serve in another culture and ultimately allow God opportunity to work to change each of us and make us more like him.

Our home base was in Siguatepaque, but each day we traveled to schoolhouses that rented out their classrooms to be converted into “clinics.” As patients rotated through the various rooms, we provided general medical care, dental work (cleanings, root canals, extractions), reading glasses, medication and performing minor procedures. Over the past seven years, seventy UC Davis medical students have traveled with CMDA to Central America for this week long medical mission trip. Last year, we saw 2000 patients, gave out hundreds of eye glasses, and witnessed over 200 spiritual decisions for Christ.

Guatemala Medical Mission 2006

Over the last four years, well over fifty-five UCDSOM medical students have traveled to Guatemala for a week long medical mission trip. This life changing experience is not only a medical mission with evangelistic outreach to the Guatemalans, but also a spiritual outreach to many medical students who come to serve. These trips provide an amazing opportunity to serve in another culture and ultimately allow God opportunity to work to change each of us and make us more like him.

In 2006, we partnered with Mano con Mano Health Reach, a nonprofit evangelical Christian health care organization whose mission is to provide quality health care to the people in under-served areas of the world in a compassionate and culturally sensitive manner. They are committed to team ministry/ mission which fosters a partnership between United States and international health care volunteers, churches, pastors, and other outreach ministries as a witness to the love of God and the message of hope in Jesus Christ.

Mano con Mano serves the local Guatemalan communities in Yalu, El Arado, and Sumpango through a Feeding Center for mothers and children, medical and dental clinics, and recently, a clean water project. We worked at the Feeding Center and local clinics, made home visits, conducted public health classes, helped with small construction projects, and hosted a Health Fair.
