The
UC Davis Student National
Medical Association (SNMA) Chapter has a long, strong tradition
of community service. SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest organization
focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color,
and has invested much effort in promoting the status quo of minorities,
particularly African-Americans. Our Imani Clinic provides free health
care year-round to Sacramento residents, and our annual Ulezi Family
Health Faire provides free health screenings and invaluable health
care information to the community of Oak Park. We must continue
in this tradition of community service while adding another dimension....mentoring.
Now it is time to reach out and to mentor young people so they may
be inspired to pursue their career aspirations. UC Davis SNMA is
in the process of establishing a Minority
Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) chapter for undergraduates,
and coordinating a scholarship for high school students as well
as a medical school workshop day. It is our hope that these efforts
will help more minorities to pursue careers in the health field
to eventually serve medically underserved areas.
